What a fantastic year it has been at Orme School! A highlight includes Orme’s feature on Fox News 10 in Phoenix that aired on TV last month. Don’t worry, for those of you who missed it, a video clip can be seen on our website! Fox News 10 heard some buzz about our school, and wanted to see for themselves some of Orme’s unique offerings and share it with the local community. The fact that Orme is generating enough buzz to draw a news crew is something worth being excited about for the Advancement Team and other Orme enthusiasts! We are also excited to announce that a crew from PBS’s Voices In America, a documentary program hosted by James Earl Jones, was on campus last month filming. Orme will be featured on the show that will premier this fall. We will keep you posted on the air date. We could not be more proud of our community at this time. You also might have recently seen an article about Orme in Edible Phoenix magazine’s summer 2016 edition. And maybe you’ve seen Orme mentioned in Green Living Magazine or Barrel Horse News. It is safe to say that Orme is no longer Arizona’s “best kept secret.” Generating this kind of publicity and excitement for the school has been no easy task. Two years ago, admission numbers at the school were plummeting and Annual Fund giving rates were dwindling. “Is there still a place in the world for a school like Orme?” was a question asked on a regular basis. A group of dedicated alumni and passionate staff and faculty, however, believed that the answer to that question was a resounding “YES,” and that more people needed to benefit from a place like Orme! They knew that now, more than ever, the world needs a school where Excellence, Tradition and Character are woven into an academically challenging curriculum in the serene beauty of the American Southwest. This dedication to the school’s preservation and future success resulted in the formation of Orme’s Advancement Team – a unique approach to Admissions and Development that fused both departments into a singular team of individuals who could travel the world not just recruiting students or soliciting monetary support, but also advancing the overall mission of Orme through alumni relations and giving. Since the summer of 2014 to this very moment, Orme’s Advancement Team has worked around the clock sharing Orme with constituents all over the world. We have visited 3 continents and more than 20 states. Team members have brought Orme to alumni and their families, as well as to potential students, campers and their families. The results have been astounding: student enrollment has grown immensely; the Annual Fund this year has surpassed $1.8 million; and there is an excitement among constituents that mirrors what was seen during the peak of Orme’s success. In the upcoming articles, you will read more about the direct impact that this unprecedented growth has had upon Orme’s community. We are proud to have one of the most globally diverse student bodies in the country. This coming school year we expect to welcome students from every inhabited continent, 20 countries, 13 states and 3 Native American tribes. Our local student population also continues to grow with more than 20 students coming to Orme from neighboring Arizona towns and cities. As our team has continued to grow our student body, we have remained cognizant of the incredible resources that we have among our alumni. We have enjoyed meeting with old and new friends while we are on the road, and it has been great to see several alumni rally around the school. Several of our California area alumni have come together to assist with our upcoming Caravan Adventure Camp. Fred Salter ’65 has generously assisted in many aspects of this camp through his activism with the Crystal Cove Beach Alliance. Camp alumnus, Gary Stellern (80 years young!) will be teaching our Orme campers how to surf, and Gray Davis ’89 will be showing them the art of Beach Volleyball! On campus this past school year, we welcomed Tony Shepard ’76, who gave hands- down the most inspiring Vespers speech of the year to our students (he clearly had the upper-hand considering he works for Disney!). Many other alumni have joined us on campus this past year for our Community Work Days, including Stanley Knowlton ’37 and his daughter Martha ’75 who spent time working in “Aunt Minna’s Garden” outside Old Main. During Reunion, our largest alumni gathering of the year, over 100 alumni students, campers and their families came to Orme to celebrate their time here. Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, our team will continue traveling and sharing Orme with the world. Stay connected and learn more about upcoming travels from our social media and our website www.ormeschool.org. We want to see you on the road! Fox News said it best, “Whether they come to Orme for the appeal of a western lifestyle or the sustainability program, this small Arizona school is redefining the boarding school experience.” We cannot wait to continue sharing this unique experience with the rest of the world. On behalf of the Advancement Team, thank you again for all of your support, and please know that without your love, support and contributions Orme would not be the school we are today! Also, be sure to stay tuned for the air date of Orme’s feature on PBS!
