Throughout the spring semester, they focused on helping the students become better horsemen and riders. Douglas was excited to explain, “In the classroom, we have been working on expanding the students’ knowledge of horses. We have studied everything from anatomy of the horse to breeds, riding disciplines, and all that falls in between. In after school activity, we have refocused on proper horse care and grooming. We have also been working on establishing a good foundation of equitation.” Douglas and Lauren have stressed that all students learn the importance of teamwork. “It is essential to establish a working partnership with the horse built on trust and understanding. Not only must the person and horse trust one another, they must also understand one another,” Douglas said. “Teamwork amongst our students is equally as important for us to grow together and stay consistent with how we communicate to the horses. We can accomplish so much more working together than alone.” The Horsemanship Team had a chance to show off their skills in a series of competitions against the Verde Valley School Horsemanship Team this spring. In April, Verde Valley School’s Horsemanship Team visited Orme for a Gymkhana, and the following week Orme visited Verde Valley School for an English riding competition. Looking towards the 2016-17 school year, Douglas and Lauren are excited to plan more competitions against neighboring schools and continue to grow Orme’s Horsemanship Team. EXCELLENCE Horsemanship SHEILA JUNE Prior to coming to Orme, you were at a top day school in the LA area. What made you choose to come to Orme? I chose to come to Orme because I wanted an experience I had never had before. I have been going to the Orme summer camps for three years and I had such amazing experiences over summer, meeting new people and going new places, I decided to go to school here. One of the main reasons Orme caught my attention was the Rodeo Team and equestrian facilities. Horseback riding has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember and Orme supplies me with the ability and facilities to ride every day! I am really happy with my decision to come to Orme. With the diverse community and new academic challenges, I feel really lucky to be able to attend such an amazing school! What are you hoping to take advantage of while at Orme? I am hoping to take advantage of Orme’s working ranch and Rodeo Team. With over 20 horses on the campus, I am able to ride and train for competitions every day. I have the opportunity to ride several different horses and become a better rider. My hope is to one day be good enough to compete in barrel races and rodeos. Orme allows me to Sheila is a 10th grade student at The Orme School. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and lives with her mom, dad, little brother Cameron, and two dogs. During her free time she wrestles (she won the Arizona State Championship in Wrestling this winter as part of Orme’s Wrestling Team) and rides horses. Riding has been a big part of her life for a long time. Prior to enrolling as a student at Orme, Sheila was a summer camper for several years. Never wanting to leave at the end of the summer, she decided to stay this year! participate in a horsemanship class during school hours where I learn basic equine anatomy and all about horses. I love the Horsemanship Program here at Orme and plan to take full advantage of it. If you can use your life’s work to solve one world issue, what would it be and why? If I could use my life’s work to solve one world issue it would be to find homes for the millions of homeless dogs in the world. I love working with animals, and from my volunteer work at local animal shelters, I know I want to change the way dogs are treated and find them all homes. I want to take stray dogs off the street or from high kill shelters and pair them up with underprivileged children, and kids in juvenile detention centers, so they can learn from each other. I also want to train some of them to be service dogs so they can give back to their community. This problem is very important to me and I know that I want to help be a part of the solution.
